The Market
The agri-food sector plays an important role in Canada’s economy: in 2021 both sectors together generated approx. 6.3% of Canada’s GDP and employed 2.1 million people.
Canada is one of the largest food exporters in the world and is planning to increase food exports, relying on high-quality and ecologically produced food and digitalization.
While large arable farms can be found in the center of Canada, in the provinces of Ontario and Québec the focus is on animal husbandry and thus on fodder production. There are smaller farms with an average of 70 to 80 cows. Canada’s dairy industry benefits greatly from stable milk prices, which are kept at a high level through supply management.
