The Market

New Zealand covers an area of 268,021 square kilometers and consists of two main islands (the North Island and the South Island) and about 700 smaller islands in the South Pacific. Today, around 5.1 million people live in New Zealand.

New Zealand is rich in natural resources, and the key sectors of its economy include agriculture, dairy farming, forestry, fishing, mining, and tourism. Agricultural production is central to the country’s economy. With a contribution to GDP of 7% (in 2020), the agricultural industry makes up a large part of the country’s tradable economy. The agriculture sector produces large quantities of various horticultural, dairy, and meat products, which are both consumed locally and exported abroad. New Zealand exports primarily to China, Australia, the USA, Japan, and South Korea. Europe accounts for 12% of agricultural exports, with Germany being New Zealand’s second-largest trading partner in Europe, after the UK. New Zealand is one of the world’s largest exporters of dairy products and lamb meat.

As of May 1, 2024, the new free trade agreement between the EU and New Zealand has come into effect. According to the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce, Germany is currently the largest trading partner for New Zealand in the EU and one of its biggest investors. Exports to New Zealand currently account for just 0.1% of total German exports, indicating significant potential for growth.

This is expected to be supported through:

  • The elimination of all tariffs on German products
  • Easier access for German companies to the New Zealand services market
  • Increased mobility for businesspeople
  • A favorable investment climate
