The Market
The agri-food sector plays an important role in Canada’s economy: in 2021 both sectors together generated approx. 6.3% of Canada’s GDP and employed 2.1 million people. Canada is one of the largest food exporters in the world, but plans to further increase food exports and is focusing on high-quality and ecologically produced food and digitalization.
The most important segments in agriculture are crop production and animal husbandry, especially dairy farming (Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia).
Canada has the most stable milk prices in the world and Canadian dairy farmers are at the forefront of applying innovation. Canada imports more agricultural machinery than it exports. Germany is the second largest supplier after the USA.
The law ratifying the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) came into force on January 20, 2023, opening up additional opportunities for German businesses in Canada.
