The Market
The agricultural and food industry remains a cornerstone of Ukraine’s economy. While production has traditionally focused on goods with low to medium added value, there are significant opportunities for foreign companies, especially those supplying advanced technology and high-quality food products. Ukraine’s fertile black soil and vast agricultural lands continue to position it as a leading global agricultural producer, benefiting the local food industry.
In 2023, Ukraine’s agricultural exports were valued at approximately $22 billion, accounting for a substantial portion of the country’s export revenues. This figure represents a slight decrease from the previous year, primarily due to challenges arising from ongoing geopolitical tensions and disruptions in export logistics.
Despite these challenges, Ukraine managed to export around 43 million metric tons of grain in 2023, an increase from 37 million metric tons in 2022. This growth was achieved through the establishment of alternative export routes and the resilience of the agricultural sector.
The production of grains and oilseeds in 2023 was estimated at 76.7 million tons, reflecting a 5% increase compared to 2022. This uptick is attributed to favorable weather conditions and effective farming practices.
The sector comprises over 6,000 companies, including national and international firms, as well as vertically integrated agricultural holdings. Notably, international companies are increasingly utilizing their Ukrainian facilities for exports to third countries, leveraging favorable production costs.
