The Market

Algeria has set itself the goal of increasing the importance of agriculture and would like to make itself independent of importing agricultural products. In 2017, the yields increased significantly. At present, the republic is one of the world’s largest importers of wheat and dairy products. The sector accounts for around 12 percent of value creation and employs almost 10 percent of the workforce. With a share of 60 percent, agriculture is the largest consumer of water.

Between 7.5 and 8 million hectares, just over 3 percent of the country’s area, are used for agriculture, of which around 1.3 million hectares are irrigated. The focus of the development strategy is on granting concessions for grain cultivation and poultry farming on state land. According to estimates by industry representatives, modern irrigation methods could expand the area under cultivation to 30 million hectares in the long term.
